This is a carnivorous plant, the northern pitcher plant. Also known as Soldier's Drinking Cup or Side-Saddle Flower (Sarracenia purpurea) it is common in Nova Scotia's acidic bogs. The leaves of the pitcher plant are carnivorous. They emit an odor of decay that attracts insects. Then an inner lining of the leaves has stiff downward-pointing hairs to trap the insects in a small pool of water at the base of the leaves. Church Point Station. Nova Scotia.
